Conceptually this is right up my alley, so I really wanted to love it. Unfortunately I found the first person POV hard to get behind, and felt like a lot of the difficult themes that were introduced didn't get the time/depth they deserved.

The back end of the book sagged quite a bit for me especially. There wasn't enough character development to temper how roundabout the plot ended up being. The ending was too clumsily executed for me to feel... particularly moved/gutted by the cycle of abuse that ended up being perpetuated by the protag.

Maybe I'd feel differently on a re-read but overall I just... wanted more from it.

The storyline was slow and uninteresting, the character was slightly intriguing but I found the lack of real tension made it a very slow read. However the poigniancy of the book doesn't go unnoticed and I appreciated the difficult topics we're handled very well

i knew the basic premise of this book going into it, but i had no idea how viscerally it would hit me as a narrative about cycles of abuse & grooming. there were bits in it that i recognized from my own past that i've never seen written down by someone other than me before.

i really enjoyed it as a story, and gailey's writing is fantastic.
i'll admit i was hoping martine would be allowed to kill the second nathan, too, and i wish it had shown enough of what the ending situation was like for her that i could feel happy for where she ended up with evelyn,
but overall it was really interesting and engaging!
