I borrowed this book because it won magnesia litera in 2007.
The book is about heavily traumatised Gita Lauschman, who tries to clear her family's name and get some peace. I've read about her small victories and grew so close to her. I care about her and adore her, mainly because she never gives up and always tries her best. In this way, she's an inspiration. Although, she does have flaws which make her believable and more relatable.
What happened with Germans in Czechoslovakia after the second world war? Nothing pretty. This book talks about an essential and often neglected part of our history. With beautiful writing, the author manages to capture a wide emotional range of the characters while telling this heart-touching story.
Page 116, it's never volountary.
Odejít dobrovolně, říká se. Nikdy to není dobrovolné.

Lidem, kteří zvednou ruku a vědomě lžou, neodpouštím. Lidem, kteří drží v ruce kudlu a vráží ji s rozkoší do živých zad, neodpouštím. Lidem, kteří skotačením a zpěvem odvádějí od té ruky pozornost neodpouštím. Jakmile člověk odpustí, spolčí se s nimi.

I kdybych stála sama proti celému světu, neschopna pohybu, zamotaná v pavučinách, dokud budu žít, tak to nevzdám. Dokud žiju, je přece naděje.

„Jste v pořádku?“ Ne, nejsem. „Ano“ „Nepotřebujete pomoc?“ Potřebuju a hned. „Ne. Děkuju.“

Hlavně se udržet v lati, nezkolabovat, neječet.
The ending made me sad. I wish Gita had more time when she finally started to get better. I dream of her being happier for a bit longer. Gita deserved so much more. I really want to give her a big hug.
Fabulous book! The writing, story, characters. I loved it so so much. The books that make you laugh at times and cry at others are the best.
