Some parts were predictable—the main theme of the book is that rich people (mostly men) tend to be horrible. But there were some unexpected turns that made this more complex:
Bear’s death was accidental rather than a sinister act by his grandfather (my original suspicion); hiding the truth was mostly about protecting the family’s reputation, but also a misguided attempt to protect Alice; my initial love of Delphine as a character was spoiled by the end.
I was pleased by the ending,
with Barbara alive, safe, and self-reliant, and Judyta respecting her autonomy allowing her to remain in hiding.
