Can you truly be happy if you know that someone is taking on all that sadness, guilt, and misery?

I like to think, that we as humans, can not be truly happy with our lives and ourselves if we know that someone is suffering because of it. Maybe that stems from my optimistic views on the human race but I like to think the best of people.
