Beast in the Cage by Tammy Walsh

This is an interesting concept, with the prison planet and fighting pit the prisoners participate in and a human “Prize Pool” as rewards for the winners… but the writing and romance was very lacking.

The spicy scenes are written in Kren’s POV and that made things kind of unsatisfying for me, especially during the first couple scenes. We just don’t know much about him so reading those moments through his POV makes them feel less meaningful. The way things were described was kind of lifeless, just going through the motions. I feel with Ivy’s POV it would be sexier and more personal.

Ivy’s motivations seem to flip flop all over the place. First she wants anything but to be chosen, then she wants to be picked, then she changes her mind again, and not long after spending a little time with Kren does she change her mind once again and desperately wants to have sex with him. The physical aspect of their relationship had a lot of time spent on it, making the rest quite lacking. ESPECIALLY because Ivy literally lies to him so he’ll finish inside her… removing his ability to give informed consent. Funny, usually it’s the men who aren’t as concerned with consent so it’s different seeing this behavior from the FL.

Nothing really happens that makes me believe they’re in love, but they don’t waste time deciding that they are. After all the lying and stuff, I just can’t get behind it. There are a handful of cute moments/lines, but that’s not enough for me to be honest.

The ending also felt VERY slapped together. Like things just suddenly work out when they need it to. There is an epilogue but the author requires you sign your for her newsletter for all of her epilogues… and I don’t know if I’m going to do that quite yet. I’ll try out the next book in the series because I’m just curious where she can go from here, the ending doesn’t suggest much.
