Of Goblins and Gold by Emma Hamm
3.0
I’m not familiar with the movie this is inspired by, so there is a chance that influenced my reading experience. It’s unlikely I’ll continue this series, but never say never.
The writing is extremely descriptive, almost to the detriment of the story. While getting lost in the lengthy scenery descriptions, though beautiful and poetic, you’ve basically done nothing in the story and gone no where… It gets quite tiring after a while. The very end had the most action but even that was slow and monotonous.
I was waiting for Freya to show some growth… and it just doesn’t come. Maybe a little tiny bit at the end, but she has to get slapped in the face with the same information by a ton of people before she even remotely starts to open her mind a little. It’s frustrating.
I did like the conversations between Freya and the Goblin King, they have fun dialogue with each other.
There are hints of romance, mostly in how Freya seems to notice his appearance and how much of a smooth talker he is by nature, it’s just a very faint and unsatisfying amount. I’m sure things heat up in later books, but I don’t know if it’s worth it for me since I already don’t really care about their romance. I just want to be made to care for their relationship and personal growth as characters, that didn’t happen.
Writing is pretty, but slow. Characters are somewhat interesting, but unlikable. Romance is slow building and just… boring.
