A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
5.0
one of the cutest books i've ever read. ove has my whole heart. i borrowed this from the library so i will be buying this book soon cause i must have my own copy.
okay so some thoughts:
1) ove and cat annoyance are so cute?? nothing makes me heart happier than seeing old ppl w animals
2) parvaneh is a queen. she is the moment. she is beauty. she is grace.
3) the way sonja is described makes me wanna believe that she is the kindest woman ever. i wish i had a teacher like her when i was in school.
4) parvaneh's kids call ove granddad???? i cried.
5) this book has the "she's sunshine and he's grumpy" trope or whatever it's called and it's ADORABLE
6) i loved the ending of this book cause yeah ove dies but it's after he found a new family for himself so he died happy and we can hope to think that he was reunited w sonja like he wanted to do the whole book. it was so tender.
7) ove taking in mirsad when his dad kicks him out??? i maybe cried.
8) the doctor saying that ove's heart is too big??? i loved that bit. not only is it literally true, i think it's also figuratively true. cause yeah ove is a grumpy old man but he loved sonja so much i think she made his heart grow, kinda like the grinch.
quotes i loved:
"He was a man of black and white. And she was color. All the color he had."
"And Ove realized that he wanted to hear her talking about the things she loved for the rest of his life."
"And when she giggled she sounded the way Ove imagined champagne bubbles would have sounded if they were capable of laughter."
"Ove had never been asked how he lived before he met her. But if anyone had asked him, he would have answered that he didn't."
"And now she stood outside the station with his flowers pressed happily to her breast, in that red cardigan of hers, making the rest of the world look as if it were made in grayscale."
"And Ove fought for her. Because that was the only thing in this world he really knew."
"Now he stands there running his hand over her gravestone. Again and again. As if he's trying to rub her back to life."
"People always said that Ove was 'bitter.' But he wasn't bloody bitter. He just didn't go around grinning the whole time. Did that mean he had to be treated like a criminal? Ove hardly thought so. Something inside a man goes to pieces when he has to bury the only person who ever understood him. There is no time to heal that sort of wound."
"Then she leans forward and whispers, 'Give my love to Sonja and thank her for the loan,' into his ear."
