Betrothed to the Yeti by Marilyn Barr, Marilyn Barr

4.0

While I would call this a romance, this story is more so about Jaya’s healing… her transition from starving young girl to a woman who stands up for herself and what she wants. Pabu helps her through this transition by providing her with safety, knowledge, and the security of someone who will not abandon her or abuse their relationship. She spent her entire life taking care of others, and yet still those people offered her no kindness… so it’s no wonder she is so closed off.

Once with Pabu, Jaya is feisty but fearful. She’s ignorant to a lot of things, but her naïveté comes out as snark. She’s definitely a fight and flight type of gal. Seeing how she gets when her and Pabu actually talk to each other makes it worth it though. I like seeing her feistiness slowly melt with her better understanding of things. The bath scene is so cute.

I enjoy Pabu’s chapters the most I think. The way he speaks is ethereal but with a touch of savagery. I appreciate his voice a lot. I really just wanted more information about the world that they’re in, I wanted to know more about the yeti society and what led to Pabu being cast out of it. Not much is explained in regards to Pabu at all… which is disappointing, considering he’s such a big part of the story. I want to see more of this world quite desperately, so if the author ever feels like expanding upon it I’ll be right there to read it.

The spice is minimal, only two scenes that were mostly glossed over with simple descriptions but nothing more. The function of the spicy scenes aren’t really for the sake of spice… but to show the connection between the characters and the evolution of their relationship/bond.
