Beast Unburdened by Robin O'Connor
4.0
Having read so many sci-fi romances, I have really seen all of the common set ups for a series. This book, while it has the common trope of a woman abducted from earth, does things so well and just different enough that it feels like a new idea.
Everything in this book is basically perfect, aside from one big flaw… the writing could definitely do with some editing. The issues I see aren’t that big, like the words are written well, it’s just the grammar and mistakes that take away from the experience. Those are easily fixed with a proper editor.
The characters are all very interesting and fun, each of them an individual. The aliens are all different and unique and explored to an extent that I found intriguing, with just enough mystery about each species to where I want to read their books. The human women are interesting, they don’t just serve as placeholder characters, but actually hold their own in a story with interesting alien characters.
One really great fact about the story is that our fl is a woman of color, she’s black. That’s not something that I’ve seen before happening in the first book of a series, it’s just more common for the first fl to be white or more ethnically vague. I appreciate the choice to make Abigail the voice that leads us into this world.
The spice could be spicier, there was a lot of build up to it though and that’s not as common in these types of stories. I more so appreciated the bond between our leads than I did their sex scenes, they communicated a lot and it felt like that really did fall in love.
