A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

5.0

Edit 2024:

Once again I've finished my yearly read of A Christmas Carol. Absolutely love it. Dickens at his finest.

Edit: 2023 reread

I read this every Christmas. I never tire of it (in fact I've read it through twice this Christmas already). It's a masterpiece by Dickens. The language is wonderful and it's such a timeless story. I love it so much

Once again I've completed my annual reading of Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol." I never tire of this book. I've read it countless times and must have seen every film version numerous times.

It's really a great place to start reading Dickens. It's a short read unlike many of his major novels that can be a bit long and sprawling if you're new to them and with some of his novels there can be so many characters and multiple storylines going on they can take a lot of concentration.

A Christmas Carol is an easy read, but it's not at all simplistic, it doesn't take long to get through yet it does contain in miniature what we get in the rest of Dickens. It's by turn very dark (sometimes we can miss how dark it can be), comedic, (some great dark comedy) and sentimental.

Dickens use of language is wonderful. He was a master wordsmith and creates so many vivid pictures. Most people I guess know at least something about Scrooge, Marleys Ghost, Bob Cratchet, The Three Spirits and of course Tiny Tim. But the characters are timeless and beautifully created.

I've read this story more times than I can count and I guess I'll continue to do so for the rest of my life. I love it and the message of hope and compassion for others. A genuine classic.
