There is very little that actually happens in this, the second book on the Dave Brandstetter series, which is in effect a series of interviews between the hero and people involved with the murder he is investigating or, to a much lesser extent, with the people in his life.

This could be impossibly monotonous and, yes, boring, but it is Hansen's genius to be able to make this not only interesting but actually engrossing. The writing, while very good, is possibly a little dated, or laced with odd stylistic idiosyncrasies but that doesn't distract much from a narrative that kept me guessing pretty much till the end.
