I don't know when I'll recover from reading this series, but it won't be anytime soon. After turning the last page I broke down crying -- which is not something I've ever experienced upon finishing a book. I didn't expect to love this series as much as I did, because I'm not really into gangster stories. Jade City (book #1) was a solid read for me but not an immediate favorite; it felt a bit slow at times because Fonda Lee was laying a lot of groundwork for politics and character development that matured or resolved in books 2 and 3. The Green Bone Saga goes in the category of series that only get better as they go, and that's because of the character development.
The No Peak Clan is full of frightening, frustrating, sometimes toxic characters that I couldn't help but love. Kaul Hilo in particular is now one of my all-time favorite characters. The multiple POVs, expansive 30-year plot, and vast geography all heighten the epic feel of the story.
A worldbuilding detail I love is how Fonda Lee subverts the "chosen one" trope by making the ability to manipulate jade a product of genetics, luck, and training, with the possibility of fatal exposure or increased tolerance through other substances.
This is a new favorite fantasy series for me. Highly recommend, but check the content warnings!
