The Hobbit, or There and Back Again by J.R.R. Tolkien

5.0

I first tried to listen to another audiobook version of The Hobbit about ten years ago — it was a full-cast recording, replete with all the sound effects like crackling fire, banging pots and clanking pans, and the like — none of which I have ever come to appreciate in an audiobook production. I abandoned it at some point, assuming I'd read the physical book in the future. Well, I never did get to it until seeing this treasure had been produced. Sign me up.

In short, it's adorable, fun, witty, and packed with exactly the right idea for an adventure. I loved it.

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is just such an enduring and endearing tale with the most charming main character, Bilbo Baggins. I didn't grow up with any of Tolkien's works, and only came into any knowledge of his oeuvre after the steady trickle of trailers and movie preliminaries proved popular among my college-aged friends who were eagerly anticipating the release of the first movie from The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

And now I'm completely geeked up about the upcoming release of the LOTR trilogy on audio by the very same Andy Serkis.

Audiobook, as narrated by [a:Andy Serkis|9538|Andy Serkis|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png]: Serkis has been a pioneering developer of motion-capture technology and, alongside that, wonderful performances of voice-over work. His talents are put to marvelous use here as the narrator of a story in which one of this best known roles plays a pivotal role. I know him well as the character of Gollum from the movie adaptions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies, but he really shines through each and every character he voices. He is just brilliant and perfect for this.
