This book started off a little slow. Ember wakes up in a strange land with no idea where she is or how she got there. The book definitely has an interesting premise, but it took way too long to get into the actual action. The moment the story hooked me was only at chapter 11, about 100 pages in. Since I normally DNF books at around 100 pages, this one cut it a little close. For a 1/3 of the book, Ember and Ada just sneak around and take their sweet time doing it.
Other than the slow start I don't really have any other complaints. I love fantasy books that drop you in the middle of the action and that don't waste time with boring exposition. We learn what we need to about the different worlds and their people through the protagonist and not with unnecessary info dumps.
The setting of the story and the world building was also unique and beautiful. I love the concept of having three broken parts of one world, and the magic plays beautifully into the story. The writing was solid and I enjoyed Ember's journey. I can't wait for the second book.
