Anatomy of a Misfit by Andrea Portes

5.0

Holy poop.
I started reading this book, having only read like three first lines of the synopsis.
Obviously, I found some surprises along the way. Main ones, being how this book wasn't just a funny light read, and how much I loved it.
A few things I must highlight:
- ANIKA'S VOICE: (I'm aware how this is not for every single person out there) I loved how she was sarcastic, and dark but also funny from the beginning. It's amazing how Andrea Portes could completely get into a fifteen year-old's voice. It was a complex character but it was so real and kind of sad behind all the saracasm. I got to really like her, her decisions were not stupid but understandable to me, she's a teenager after all.

-CHARACTER'S COMPLEXITY: By this I'm meaning (besides Anika) Shelli, Logan, Becky, Tikkany and more. Being teenagers (some stereotypes) you would think they would be dry and predictable. But the author added so much to their personality and backstories, meaning family too, they characters ended up being really rich and complex. This also made it easier to get into the story.

-BREAKING OF STEREOTYPES: I don't know if the word is "breaking" but I loved how by getting to know the characters, we deconstructed some stereotypes but not the whole way like in some books when people look mean and then they are all nice people. The world doesn't work like that, but I loved how Portes constructed this tiny world of Nebraska not being afraid to judge and call up some dirty stuff.

-ENDING: I don't want to talk a lot about it, because I don't want to spoil it (though it was a bit predictable to me). I like it I really did, I may not have loved the LAST chapter, but I liked the thing before that, it quite fucked me up to be honest.

I loved a lot of the characters, CHARACTERS WERE SO GREAT!!
I'm gonna stop now, it feels like I'm just rambling so.
A great great light sarcastic-funny but devastating read. I give it 4.5 stars that turn into 5 wooo!
