Jack of Hearts (and Other Parts) by L.C. Rosen

3.0

This book could almost have served as inspiration for the excellent Netflix series Sex Education, which appeared a year after its publication. It is however resolutely queer-focused and provides young LGBT readers with answers to questions they may have in real life. In that respect the book is quite pedagogic, though not in a preachy way. The blackmail story line (the key to which is not too difficult to figure out) adds some tension to the narrative but I wasn't really convinced by Jack's attitude of reservation (which feels like it is only there as a means to allow the story to carry on for longer). It's a fun book though, and one I could possibly have found useful in my younger years as a baby gay trying to figure things out.
