This series is just so good and I’ve been in a bit of a slump so I’m going RIGHT TO the next book! Not many series make me want to read books back to back like that anymore, but this one really does it for me.
The mixture of intense romance/attraction mixed with all the life and death situations they’re dealing with, all of the despair that comes with living in this apocalyptic world, just draws you in and captures your attention. It’s hard to look away. The Vullan are quite alien and I love how that’s been shown in each book so far, especially with some moments that make them feel more human as well, just showing that even though they’re aliens they’re also quite similar to us.
Sam is a fun character to follow, easy to care about as we saw how much she suffered in the first book and now how she’s dealing with the trauma. Strong and reliable, she really pulls herself together when it counts, but reveals her vulnerability in select moments like when she thinks of her sister and all that’s she lost. Characters that are both strong and weak always have my heart.
Ga’var is a more rough around the edges type of guy, but it works for him. He sort of grows on you in that way. His loyalty and honor also makes him a wonderful lead. He always wants to do the right thing even when he isn’t entirely sure what that is in the moment. A bit of alien naivety in the face of human customs and language is always fun. He also has great interactions with the other Vullan, especially Fer’ro, and quite a few made me actually laugh out loud.
The action in the book was great! I appreciate when the intense fighting moments feel like life or death and that’s really portrayed here well. Peeks into the other characters make me curious about them but also the interactions with Adira is great since I already loved her from the first book. There are still so many mysteries about the aliens and the tech and so many other things that I just want more and more, I really appreciate that slow feeding of information the author does.
