3.5
3.5⭐️ 1🌶️
MOOD: adventurous, mysterious
TROPES: enemies to lovers, fated mates
GENRES: contemporary, supernatural/fantasy
FAV QUOTE:
MAIN CHARACTERS: Alexi Dragomir (half blood vampire) and Zara Knight (werewolf)
THE GOOD: The world made sense. It was refreshing to have a contemporary/supernatural story in a city that wasn't NYC, especially since Portland and the Pacific Northwest make a better backdrop for werewolves running around. The characters are fairly flushed out, even the ones that we meet briefly, and the connections between them are established early on. The banter between Alexi and Zara is hilarious - they are also equally matched, for the most part, so there are no damsels (or dudes) in distress.
THE NEUTRAL: I typically enjoy fated mates and instalust or instalove but this one didn't hit. The "insta" part never seemed to move beyond lust and the dialogue felt cheesy because of it. There were a few moments where something would be mentioned (like a symbol) and was never mentioned again so I didn't know if that was a red herring or an error. The big conflict at the end was just super confusing. I don't think there were enough hints about the possibilities of what could happen with the fated mates so everything felt very Deus Ex Machina and unbelievable - yes, unbelievable in a book about vampires & werewolves.
THE MEH: The pacing felt off for a book of this length; it took me longer to read than I expected. Some characters had similar names and were introduced early, which just isn't helpful like Alexi and Aziel. As I was reading, something felt off and I couldn't place it but I think it's that this isn't a romance - it's a love story set within a suspense/thriller. Romances have 2 criteria and I feel this only met one of them.
CW: violence
DISCLAIMER: I received an advance review copy. This is my honest review.
