Everyone knows this story, and I'm no exception, but I'd never read the book and figured this Christmas was the right time to take it on! And I'm so glad I did--I've always enjoyed the characters and storyline of "A Christmas Carol," and they are ever-richer to me for having read them in their original forms. The language is lovely, the descriptions vivid, and the extra bits the movies never show made the story that much more poignant. Love it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this reread of A Christmas Carol. It was just as great as I remembered and Tim Curry did an amazing job narrating.

Very happy I read this classic that has stood the test of time. It was interesting to compare it to the many movie versions.

The first thing that caught my eye about the Book-To-Table Classics is their beautiful covers! Aren’t they lovely? I also liked the idea of exploring recipes from the times and locations of both Pride and Prejudice and A Christmas Carol! I’m quite the foodie, and have noticed food in every book that I read for as long as I can remember. The classics are no exception! I remember that I’ve looked up a number of dishes that I came across in some of the classics that I’ve read, and found helpful to less-helpful results.

I’m, therefore, so happy that Puffin Books has come up with this series of Book-To-Table Classics! Each of these books is bound very nicely (and quite sturdily) which is always something that I appreciate, especially for books that I would read around and in the kitchen. The interiors of these books are also designed quite nicely with embellishments and illustrations and photography that goes quite nicely with each respective classic and the recipes that go with it. These books are quite a treat to have for those who are lovers of the classics and of food like myself, and I highly recommend them as gifts to oneself and/or for the other foodies in your life who also enjoy the classics!

Charles Dickens’ *A Christmas Carol* is a timeless classic that continues to capture the hearts of readers with its warmth, generosity, and profound social commentary. First published in 1843, this novella has become synonymous with the spirit of Christmas, offering a tale of redemption, compassion, and the power of personal transformation. Dickens’ masterful storytelling and rich character development ensure that *A Christmas Carol* remains one of the most beloved holiday stories ever told.

The story follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly and cold-hearted man who cares only for wealth and his own self-interest. His life is turned upside down when he is visited by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, and then by three more spirits: the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Each spirit shows Scrooge different aspects of his life, leading him to confront his past, evaluate his present, and face the grim future that awaits him if he does not change. The culmination of this haunting journey is a deeply moving transformation, as Scrooge learns the true meaning of Christmas and the importance of kindness, generosity, and human connection.

What makes *A Christmas Carol* so impactful is Dickens’ ability to blend humour, pathos, and moral lessons into a compact and accessible narrative. The characters, particularly Scrooge, are vividly drawn, and Scrooge’s journey from a bitter, selfish man to one filled with joy and charity is nothing short of inspiring. The portrayal of Scrooge’s eventual remorse and repentance offers a hopeful message: that it is never too late to change and embrace a better path in life.

The novella also stands as a powerful critique of the social inequalities of Dickens’ time. Through Scrooge’s initial indifference to the suffering of others and his eventual awakening to the need for compassion and social responsibility, Dickens reminds readers of the importance of empathy, generosity, and community care. The characters of Tiny Tim and the Cratchit family, who embody kindness and resilience despite their hardships, are central to this message of social conscience.

A standout quote from the story is: *“God bless us, every one!”* This simple yet profound exclamation, spoken by Tiny Tim, encapsulates the spirit of the story: a call for unity, love, and care for all people, regardless of their station in life. It is a reminder that Christmas, at its heart, is about compassion and generosity towards others.

Dickens’ writing is full of rich, vivid imagery and his descriptions are both charming and evocative. The narrative moves at a brisk pace, with each of the ghosts’ visits adding layers of meaning and moral reflection to the story. The emotional depth of Scrooge’s redemption, particularly in the final scenes when he becomes a beloved and benevolent figure, resonates deeply with readers of all ages.

*A Christmas Carol* is not only a beautifully written holiday classic but also a profound moral tale about the importance of kindness, generosity, and the capacity for personal transformation. It’s a story that remains as relevant today as it was when first written, offering a timeless reminder of the values that truly matter. A must-read every Christmas season, *A Christmas Carol* is a heartwarming and life-affirming tale that continues to inspire hope and joy.

You can tell that Dickens was paid by the word but it’s still a good story and fairly quick and interesting read.
